University of Washington Harborview Medical Center Cart Wash Sterilizer Upgrades

A progressive design-build project completed with Mortenson Construction, the cart washer replacement project at the University of Washington Harborview Medical Center proved to be an exciting project with unique challenges. The initial obstacle was determining where the replacement cart washers should be placed within the existing facility. Additionally, as no more than one cart washer or one sterilizer could be out of service at the same time, this selective renovation was delivered in multiple phases.

The design-build team developed and presented multiple solutions to the owner, and the final selection met the hospital’s needs while maintaining the project schedule and budget. The result included air, water, power, data, and HVAC infrastructure upgrades and two new cart washers and five new sterilizers in the existing Central Processing Unit (CPU). Both mechanical and electrical engineering services were provided by Coffman.
