Utility-Scale Battery Energy Storage Yard

Coffman performed fire protection and explosion safety engineering services for a new utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) installation. The new facility included the installation of 354 BESS enclosures capable of storing over 1.38 GWh of energy.

In addition to fire detection and fire protection system design, Coffman conducted several hazard analysis investigations to document the overall safety of the proposed facility design. Coffman’s engineering services included plume modeling using PHAST software to determine the possible downwind consequences of a thermal runaway event, and explosion modeling using FLACS software to understand the expected consequences of a deflagration event. FDS fire modeling was completed to evaluate the potential spread of fire to adjacent equipment during a fire event.
