Spokane Central Service Center

The City of Spokane’s Central Service Center consolidates the City’s Fleet Services and Solid Waste Management Departments to achieve operational and energy efficiency. Coffman joined Garco Construction, and Bernardo Wills Architects, to make up the City’s design-build team. Our Coffman team provided civil, electrical, mechanical, and structural engineering, as well as land surveying services for the new 57,500 sf facility featuring vehicle service bays, office space, associated support spaces, and a compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling station capable of fueling 100 city vehicles simultaneously, as well as one fast fill station.

Our team developed an innovative structural framing system to allow for routing of the CNG gas piping and electrical block heater plugs while maintaining a clear 6’ walkway between rows of CNG fleet vehicles to increase driver safety while accessing the fleet. The facility also included infrastructure necessary to convert the City’s solid waste fleet to CNG vehicles over the next 10 years—a key driver of the project. Largely as a result of this project’s focus on sustainability and its “green” designation, Spokane’s Fleet Services Department earned the “EnviroStar” designation, making it the first governmental body to earn this recognition. The project was also honored with the 2016 Design-Build Excellence in Process award from the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA).
