Southwestern College Math & Science Building

Coffman provided structural engineering services for a new math, science, and engineering building for Southwestern College. The 100,000 sf building replaces aging campus facilities constructed in the mid-sixties and early seventies with new spaces that allow for the expansion of STEM-related course offerings and programs and support the long-term growth of the Chula Vista campus.

The new building is a two-story, concrete-framed facility, which features 15 laboratories and classrooms, lecture rooms, a biology greenhouse, a rooftop astronomy telescope observation platform, faculty and staff office spaces, a Dean’s Suite, and collaboration areas. The building houses the biology, chemistry, physics, geology, and mathematics departments.

Funded by Proposition R, the new LEED-designed building is one of the most energy-efficient buildings constructed to date by the Southwestern College District.
