Scripps Mercy Replacement Hospital

As part of Scripps Health’s largest building program in its 125-year history, the health system allocated roughly $2.6 billion for construction projects at its hospital campuses across San Diego County. As part of this master improvement plan, a new replacement hospital was designed for the Hillcrest campus.

Coffman provided fire protection engineering services for the project, which included a new 12-story high-rise replacement hospital (630,000 sf), a three-story hospital support building with four subterranean parking levels (237,000 sf), six-story high-rise medical office building (163,000 sf), and a new open parking garage. The project included elements under both HCAI jurisdiction and the City of San Diego jurisdiction. Coffman provided building/fire code consulting, prepared engineering judgments, performed smoke control rational analysis for high-rise smoke-proof enclosures, coordinated high-rise, and fire protection system requirements under a holistic fire protection strategy, and assisted the project team with addressing complex code issues with HCAI. Coffman developed egress solutions during various construction phases to allow the existing hospital, and later the new hospital, to remain occupied during the complex construction sequences at the campus and worked with the project team on fire department access strategies during the different project phases.
