Kaiser Permanente San Marcos Medical Center

Kaiser Permanente San Marcos Medical Center is constructing a 420,000 sf, seven-story acute care hospital tower with a supporting 26,000 sf central utility plant, depressed loading, service yard, and parking. With the growing demand of Kaiser Permanente’s services in the San Marcos community, the new hospital building will increase the existing medical center’s capacity to treat and care for patients by adding 206 beds including ICU, medical surgical, NICU, LDRP, and post-partum services, as well as 51 emergency service bays, eight operating rooms, and two imaging rooms. The high-energy performance building is targeting LEED Gold certification. The existing Kaiser Permanente campus in San Marcos includes four medical office buildings (MOBs).

Coffman provided fire protection engineering services for the new hospital tower including code consulting, preparing engineering judgments, and addressing complex code issues with the California office of Healthcare Access and Information (HCAI). On an expedited timeline, Coffman’s fire protection team used their experience with HCAI approval to tackle complex code issues early in the design process.
