WMATA Bladensburg Bus Maintenance Facility and Parking Garage

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s (WMATA) new Bladensburg Bus Maintenance Facility in Washington, D.C. is a major infrastructure investment designed to support the agency’s evolving fleet of diesel, compressed natural gas (CNG), and extended-range battery electric buses (BEBs).

For this design-build project, Coffman delivered fire protection, life safety, and corrosion control engineering services, along with project management support. The project included the design of a 130,000 sf maintenance facility and a 200,000 sf parking garage. The fire protection design included water-based suppression systems for both buildings and was developed in alignment with Washington D.C. construction codes WMATA’s design criteria, and Factory Mutual (FM) Global requirements to support safety and flexibility across multiple energy sources. The team also supported a pilot BEB phase at the Shepherd’s Parkway facility and conducted hazard analyses to address the unique challenges of fleet-level electric bus charging and storage.
