Transbay Terminal

Coffman provided structural engineering services for the metal stairs, ladders, and miscellaneous steel for the planned new $4.5 billion transportation hub for the Bay Area. Some of the approximately 20 stairs extend all through nine levels of the center. Many are highly visible and functional public access stairs with terrazzo finishes. Significant coordination with the design team for the building was needed to properly accommodate inter-story drift without resulting in damage to the access and egress stairs. The design of all stairs was performance-based in order to be consistent with the design of the rest of the transit center, using the same criteria for seismic events and performance levels.
