P-3105 Munitions Storage Igloos

As Designer of Record, Coffman managed and provided civil, electrical, mechanical, structural, and fire protection engineering design services for the development of 20 new munitions storage igloos (MSMs), a generator building, and a telecommunications building at Andersen Air Force Base in Guam. This project enhances the Air Force’s storage capacity, safety, and security, boosting military readiness and strategic importance of Andersen AFB in the Indo-Pacific region.

The facilities design includes reinforced concrete foundations, 7-bar rated construction, floor slabs, columns, beams, lighting and electrical, fire protection, lightning protection, intruder detection, and all necessary supporting utilities. Performed in two parts, Part A was design-bid-build consisting of the 20 munitions storage igloos including foundations and floors, access roadway for 6th street between C and D Avenue, the MSM Ventilators, and the MSM lightning protection systems. Part B, delivered under a design-build delivery method, covered the MSM subgrade, waterproofing, door coatings, earthwork, access roads and pavements, utilities supporting MSMs, and the generator and telecommunications buildings. The scope of work included preparation of the subgrade to support the munitions storage igloos, and construction of the earth berm over each MSM. It also included associated site and roadway development, landscaping, and other related exterior site development work. The grading design manages storm water collection and disposal in shallow depressions adjacent to the MSMs and roadways. A wall subdrain system is installed at each MSM and connects to a percolation pit.

Coffman also provided telecom site distribution for the generator and telecom buildings and each MSM building performed under the direction of a Registered Communications Distribution Designer (RCDD); comprehensive electrical systems including power, lighting, lightning protection, and grounding; design of an air conditioning system; design of motorized wall mounted ventilator units; exhaust air duct and intact louver vents.
