Japanese American Museum (JANM) Redesign
Coffman is providing mechanical, electrical, and fire protection engineering services, as well as commissioning for tenant improvements at the Japanese American National Museum. The project supports facility upgrades associated with the Collection Assessment for Preservation (CAP) analysis and Interpretive Plan and Core Exhibition (IPCE) efforts within the two-story existing museum with below-grade parking in the Los Angeles Little Tokyo neighborhood.
The commissioning scope includes evaluation of existing HVAC systems, infrastructure, and controls to address deteriorating environmental conditions impacting sensitive collections, and developing enhanced humidification and dehumidification strategies to improve stability across exhibition spaces with varying ceiling heights. Three alternative system concepts for humidity control will be prepared, advancing one to schematic design level, while coordinating closely with architectural and exhibit teams to integrate mechanical system upgrades with proposed tenant improvements with the intent to align with exhibit layouts, operational needs, and ongoing facility enhancements.
