Hungry Horse Dam Crane Modernization

Mechanical and electrical engineering, as well as land surveying, for the first phase of the Hungry Horse Dam Crane Modernization project. This included the evaluation and documentation of the current condition of the 125T outdoor intake gantry crane, the two 290T indoor powerhouse bridge cranes, the 25T machine shop bridge crane, and the 40T indoor valve house bridge crane. Coffman also prepared concept designs to modernize the existing cranes.

Coffman determined the operational status of each crane, performed an annual type inspection for top level (visual) deficiencies, interviewed maintenance and operator personnel, reviewed the existing and as-built drawings, prepared machinery horsepower sizing calculations for the hoists and travel drives, travel, and trolley machinery. Additionally, Coffman prepared preliminary electrical load calculations, collected commercial product data, produced a SolidWorks solid model of each crane incorporating the recommended new components, and interviewed and solicited pricing information from vendors to accurately provide the most current controls upgrade recommendations supplemented with form, fit, and functional analysis of the new equipment. Five technical reports were prepared, one per crane, that contained a comprehensive list of data collected and the recommendations for the upgrade. The final reports included engineering estimates for the implementation of the modernization retrofits.
