FTW Community Activity Center

Under a partly cloudy sky with a cool breeze, Fort Wainwright held a groundbreaking ceremony for new morale, welfare, and recreation facilities. The community activity center, one of two new facilities Coffman is providing engineering services on, brings much-needed indoor, multi-functional recreational opportunities to the furthest north military installation in the United States.

The new community activity center is in the “Fort Wainwright city center” area, by the commissary, PX, current bowling alley, and hotel. The facility is 39,625 square feet and comprises a variety of recreational features, with an indoor playground claiming a significant amount of floor space. It will also include a toddler play area and family fitness room. Families living on the base have long requested an indoor, multi-functional family space on post.

The new center has numerous features that appeal to soldiers and families alike. It contains a 16-lane modern bowling alley; electronic and traditional gaming, with multi-sport simulators and virtual reality, as well as foosball and pool tables; an outdoor patio for outdoor summertime enjoyment; party rooms; and food and beverage operations, including food service and a full bar.

Coffman provided full multidiscipline services for the design and construction of this single-story building with two distinguishing entertainment venue spaces. The facility includes a full-service kitchen with a shipping and receiving area for deliveries for the food and beverage function. It also includes a “half court” sized sports arena area with the capability of a suspended drop net for sports such as half-court basketball, pickle ball, badminton, and volleyball.
