University of California San Diego Center for Novel Therapeutics

The Center for Novel Therapeutics is an oncology research center located in the University of California San Diego’s (UCSD) Science Research Park. The 137,500 sf life sciences building is the first academic industry drug discovery incubator in San Diego. The facility is a partnership between UC San Diego and BioMed Realty and leverages the strength of the adjacent UC San Diego Moore’s Cancer Center to attract leading private sector companies researching cancer therapies and pharmaceuticals. Coffman was the structural engineering designer of the structure featuring a three-story atrium with cantilevered conference rooms, two bridges, a skylight roof with integrated photovoltaic glass, and a cantilevered concrete stairwell. The facility was constructed of cast-in-place concrete featuring a 120,000 sf laboratory building, a fitness center, and subterranean parking shared by multiple tenants.
