Timmons Subaru is a 71,000 sf new car dealership located on the high-profile Cherry Avenue in the City of Long Beach. Coffman provided structural engineering services for the new multi-level car dealership, including a 9,000 sf mezzanine, service drive canopy, quick lube bays, service bays for up to 48 cars, car detailing port, and rooftop car parking.
The main public-facing structure consists of special steel moment frames with a steel hybrid panelized roof. To maximize the display visibility of new cars, the exterior skin of the showroom consists primarily of a glass storefront. Steel moment frames were chosen as the lateral-resisting system in this area to minimize the visibility of the structure. Moment frames were also utilized at the service drive canopy to accommodate several column-free car lanes. The back-of-house portion of the dealership consists primarily of CMU walls with steel-framed roofs. The roof deck over the service bays was designed as a post-tensioned concrete deck. This design allowed for a relatively column-free service bay area and car parking at the roof level. The lube bays included a basement area to provide access to the underside of cars during maintenance.
