Goose Creek Correctional Facility

Opened in 2012, Goose Creek Correction Center (GCCC) is a light-medium security prison located at Point Mackenzie, Alaska, that houses approximately 1,500 male inmates. The new 440,000 sf campus includes maintenance shops, warehouses, outside administration, education, and support buildings, and can operate for 14 days of standby power, fuel, and supplies in the event of a power failure, natural disaster, or another state of emergency.

Coffman provided mechanical and electrical engineering design where energy efficiency and power consumption reduction were key influences for the facility located in an extreme northern climate. As a result, the design included cost efficient mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering (MEP) systems and a highly insulated envelope system. Mechanical design features creative heat recovery concepts, high efficiency modular boilers and passive cooling using outdoor air eliminating the need for cooling. Electrically, energy efficient equipment and advanced indoor and outdoor lighting control was used to minimize energy usage through occupancy sensors controls and lighting relay panels that automatically shut off when not in use.
