MAFB B145 Life Safety Upgrades

Building 145 on Malmstrom Air Force Base, originally constructed in 1976, needed upgrades to comply with current codes and standards. Coffman provided fire protection engineering services and QFPE services for the facility, which includes a Mission Essential (MAC II) IT room, per TWPPEWG G 3-600-01.01-18. There were also structural engineering services for this seismic category IV building to accommodate the necessary fire protection upgrades.

Recommendations for the 34,525 sf building included a new fire alarm system, a new mass notification system, and installation of an early detection smoke system (VESDA) with integrated smoke removal for the IT room. It also included revision of the existing fire sprinkler system for the communications room into a separate zone to meet code requirements. The project also included the rectification of various life safety issues and egress deficiencies, as well as fire ratings. Coffman provided a life safety analysis in accordance with UFC 3-600-01 and acted as the Qualified Fire Protection Engineer to witness final testing for the project.
