CSU San Marcos Dual Elevator Towers

Coffman is providing structural, civil, mechanical, electrical, and fire protection engineering services for the design-build addition of two elevator structures to the existing Arts Building and the existing Science Hall 1 Building on the campus of California State University San Marcos in San Diego County. The new elevators are three-story standalone towers, designed to connect to the interiors of each of the two buildings to minimize disturbed space. Coffman worked with the campus project management team to identify ideal locations for the elevator towers during the programming and schematic design phases.

The elevators are being designed to meet 2019 California Building Code (CBC) requirements and to obtain approvals from Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) such as the State Fire Marshal. The project GMP budgets are $2.7M for the Arts Building and $2.8M for the Science Hall 1 Building. Project challenges include maintaining student access to the building and minimizing disruption to student activities throughout the construction process.
