5505 Morehouse

Coffman provided structural and fire protection engineering services for a full exterior and interior renovation of the existing buildings and site at 5505 Morehouse from an existing office use into a life science use. The two existing buildings are three-story, 72,000 sf steel framed structures with a 25,000 sf ground level partial subterranean pre-cast concrete double-tee framed basement.

The renovation work included a new enclosed, 50 ft tall, steel multi-tier buckling restrained braced frame atrium between the existing buildings. The new steel structure is seismically separated from the existing buildings, and much of the steel is to remain exposed. The atrium also includes new raised pedestrian bridges at floor levels, exit stairs, and a coordination room on each floor.
