UC San Diego Nuevo West & East Graduate Student Housing
The University of California, San Diego’s Nuevo West and Nuevo East graduate student housing is a thriving mixed use community with academic, collaborative, and private living areas. The development is a keystone in the university’s plan to transform the campus into a world-class learning-living environment and destination.
The $142M, 442,000 sf, Nuevo West features 884 graduate student beds and 80 beds for medical center patients and their families in two main buildings. West also features a café, marketplace, activity and study rooms, a central plaza, a community garden, and gathering spaces.
The $211M, 720,000 sf, Nuevo East consists of 1,374 beds in five residential buildings, three of which are high-rise, as well as an exchange building that includes fitness and wellness spaces, administrative offices, multipurpose rooms, gardens, and gathering spaces. Nuevo West and East will be connected with a future pedestrian and bicycle bridge.
Coffman was proud to support the Hensel Phelps and Mithun design-build team by providing fire protection engineering and life safety consulting. Services for both buildings included: reviews for code compliance, negotiating complex building and fire code issues with the UCSD Campus Fire Marshal, coordination of fire protection systems, performance based design approaches for prescriptively noncompliant or subjective issues, smoke control design analysis including rational analysis report preparation for smokeproof enclosures, and collaboration with the mechanical engineers to confirm the design methodology and system design were in compliance with the applicable codes and standards.
