UCSD Nuevo West Graduate Student Housing

Designed to be the vital portal to the future pedestrian and bicycle bridge that will connect East and West campuses into a cohesive whole, the $150.7M, 441,788 sf, Nuevo West Graduate Student Housing is a mixed-use residential and common amenity program that includes two residential buildings and a market. The Nuevo West residential community provides a total of 884 new beds⁠—804 beds for graduate student residents and 80 beds for the Patient Family House North, which accommodates the needs of family and relatives of patients being treated at the nearby UCSD Medical Center. The diverse resident population is supported by a mix of shared amenities such as a marketplace, café, activity and study rooms, music practice rooms, central plaza, community garden, outdoor cooking and gathering space, healing garden, bouldering garden, and a rooftop perch. Nuevo West includes a six-story parking structure with 1,227 parking stalls.

Coffman provided fire protection engineering and life safety consulting for the design-build project. Services included developing the fire protection engineering and life safety code compliance approach, negotiating complex building and fire code issues with the UCSD Campus Fire Marshal, and coordination of fire protection engineering systems with the design-build team. As well as providing smoke control design and rational analysis report for smokeproof enclosures. Coffman developed the smoke control design approach and integrated with the mechanical engineers to ensure the design methodology and system design was in compliance with the applicable codes and standards.
