Northwood Middle School
Northwood Middle School was over 50 years old before it was decided that the students and teachers in the Mead School District in Spokane, Washington needed something new. Coffman provided structural and electrical engineering for 104,000 sf of the new expansion and 17,000 sf of renovated space for Northwood Middle School.
The $29M project includes two-stories of expansion for classroom space as well as the third mechanical mezzanine level and renovations to the gymnasium and vocational technology classroom spaces. Complex geometry and differing roof planes throughout the building brought unique challenges resulting in a design that incorporates a mixture of steel, masonry, and concrete framing, bracing, and shear walls. Northwood Middle School now serves 800+ modern learners in the Spokane community.
