National Institute of Aging (NIA) Alzheimer’s and Related Dementias Temporary Research Facility

Coffman provided fire protection and life safety code consulting and sprinkler design services for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institute of Aging (NIA) Center for Alzheimer’s and Related Dementias Temporary Research Facility. This new building is a transformative research center, bringing together world-leading scientists from both within the intramural and extramural research programs, as well as from industry and academia.

The NIA program requirement consists of design criteria for physical/functional spaces and the creation of interior and exterior environments which nurture and encourage interaction, collaboration, and unencumbered communication between researchers in open, flexible, and multiuse rooms. Coffman worked closely with the NIH Division of Fire Marshal’s Office to provide a compliant design and utilize aspects of performance code compliance to meet unique requirements for the building.
