China Lake Airfield Sewer Replacement

Coffman provided civil and structural engineering, as well as trenchless design services for this design/build rehabilitation project. The existing gravity sewer mains near Hangars 1 and 3 at NAWS China Lake was rehabilitated using cured in place pipe (CIPP) trenchless installation methods. The existing manholes were rehabilitated using cured in place manhole (CIPM) installation methods. The sewer system had reached the end of its useful life and did not meet current standards on distances between manholes. The system was rehabilitated and new manholes and adjusting alignments were completed to remove sewer pipes under buildings.

This project included rehabilitating approximately 4,500 feet of 8-inch and 10-inch vitrified clay (VC) pipe, installation of approximately 200 feet of 8-inch polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe, abandonment of approximately 24 feet of existing 8-inch and 10-inch pipe, CIPM of 21 existing manholes, eight new manholes, and surface rehabilitation in excavation areas.
