AURA Grace Cathedral

Coffman provided fire protection and structural engineering services for the installation of the AURA experience at San Francisco’s historic Grace Cathedral. Created and presented by Moment Factory and co-presented by Fever, AURA is a nighttime multimedia experience that transforms the Cathedral into a living canvas celebrating the harmony between humanity and nature, through projection, sound design, and lighting effects.

As the Structural Engineer of Record, Coffman developed a comprehensive testing plan to evaluate existing material strengths, created advanced 3D analysis models of the cathedral’s arched trusses, and engineered custom details to support projection screens and equipment. The team also assisted with the city permitting process and provided ongoing support throughout construction.

In addition, Coffman’s fire protection team assessed existing materials, advised on necessary testing, and reviewed the installation’s impact on the building’s fire safety systems.
