Albion Elementary School Seismic Retrofit

Coffman provided structural engineering services for the voluntary seismic retrofit at Albion Elementary School in Los Angeles. The project scope includes the auditorium and two classroom buildings totaling approximately 36,000 sf. The buildings were originally constructed in the 1920s and subsequently retrofitted in 1936. The focus of the retrofit is to provide out-of-plane wall anchorage and strengthen the existing wood and concrete diaphragms. The retrofit scope was determined by ASCE 41-17  Tier 1 and Tier 2 evaluations.

In addition to the retrofit, Coffman provided a testing plan to evaluate the strength of the existing concrete and foundation dowels. The project also involves Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) upgrades including installing two interim housing classrooms, upgrading suspended ceilings to meet current standards, designing a new CMU elevator tower with an elevated steel-framed walkway, and providing structural support for remodeled restrooms.
