MEET TJ
TJ McCann, SE is a principal and licensed structural engineer in California specializing in the seismic retrofit of existing structures and the design of complex structural systems. His experience spans commercial, aerospace, healthcare, education, industrial, civic, and government facilities, with expertise across steel, concrete, masonry, timber, and light‑gauge framing.
TJ plays a key role in Coffman’s Alternative Energy initiative, serving as the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) structural subject matter expert and leading structural design on some of the firm’s largest alternative energy projects. He frequently collaborates with teams across Coffman offices as a technical lead for specialized analyses, including dynamic evaluation of oscillating equipment, structural vibration studies, and seismic evaluation of equipment enclosures.
TJ specializes in seismic retrofits of existing buildings including non-ductile concrete and pre-Northridge steel moment frames. His experience includes the use of buckling‑restrained braced frames (BRBFs), fiber‑reinforced polymers (FRP), and viscous dampers to meet stringent performance and code requirements. He has served as structural project manager and lead engineer on technically demanding projects, including healthcare utility facilities and aerospace infrastructure with sensitive operational constraints.
Outside of work, TJ enjoys spending time with his family and staying active through hiking, camping, surfing, and golf.
TJ holds a BS in Civil Engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles, and a MS in Structural Engineering from the University of California, San Diego.
