Meet Beverly

Beverly Ishii-Nakayama, SE, is a structural engineering principal advisor in Coffman’s Honolulu office. Beverly joined Coffman in November 2022 as part of the asset purchase agreement with Shigemura, Lau, Sakanashi, Higuchi & Associates, Inc. (SLSH). Beverly joined SLSH as a structural engineer in 1988 and achieved the title of Vice President over her career with the firm.

Throughout her 40+ years of experience, Beverly has completed projects throughout the Pacific Rim in Hawaii, Guam, Japan, and Korea, including projects for private clients and the Department of Defense. With her extensive experience in the Pacific Rim, she is experienced in designing structures for this region that endures some of the highest seismicity and typhoon winds in the world.

In recent years, Beverly’s projects have focused on educational facilities, designing entire campuses for Kamehameha Schools at Keaau, and for the Department of Defense in Okinawa, Japan. Her work for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Japan Engineering District has provided Beverly with experience with construction practices in Japan, specifying products and materials meeting the Japan Industrial Standards and producing drawings that are in metric and constructible in Japan.

In her role as Principal Advisor at Coffman, Beverly works with Department Managers to delegate work to other team members to leverage experience, monitor the progress of projects, maintain quality control, foster client relationships, and mentor junior staff members.

Beverly graduated from Stanford University with a bachelor’s and master’s degree (emphasis on structural) in civil engineering. She continued her education to attain her Master of Business Administration from the University of California, Berkeley.
