Mott-Smith Laniloa Recreation Deck Improvements

Originally built in 1976, Mott-Smith Laniloa is a 34-story, poured concrete, residential tower located at the base of Makiki Heights. An enticing feature of the facility is its large, lobby level recreation deck.

The 75,000 sf recreation deck features a pool, hot tub, tennis courts, a putting green, a pavilion with kitchen/barbecue/party facilities, game areas, potting area, and a children’s play area with wading pool. Coffman provided electrical engineering services to design the replacement of the deck’s exterior lighting, upgrade power distribution and connections, and renovate the existing community kitchen, restrooms, and event room. Our team also furnished lighting upgrades to the upper level of the parking garage.

Our team carefully integrated lighting into the deck elements such as placing lights in large planter boxes to furnish general pathway and egress lighting, integrating lights into trellis structures for the barbeque areas, and providing under bench accent lights for open seating spaces. Gathering areas and the putting green featured post top mounted pedestrian scale lights, and decorative lighting in the wading pool adds interest to the space.

A centralized dimming system was provided to tailor the desired output and provide nighttime set back and improved energy efficiency. Electrical conduit and junction boxes were routed in a raised floor system which conceals the infrastructure but allows access for serviceability and future additions.
