Harborview Medical Center Norm Maleng Building

One of the first projects Coffman completed on the Harborview Medical Center campus was the Norm Maleng Building. The project included expanding a variety of inpatient departments including intensive care, behavioral health, acute care, surgery, recovery, central supply, and various clinics. While initially the project was focused on LEED certification, the owner decided instead to have available funds applied directly toward energy efficiency measures and enhanced maintenance systems.

As the mechanical engineer for this project, Coffman was able to design and implement increased chiller plant efficiency, low velocity air systems, multiple supply air risers to minimize reheat strategic use of VAV, and unoccupied setback for the operating rooms to ultimately save the client of 1.5 million kWh per year, and improve the reliability of systems while simplifying maintenance. For example, heat recovered from computer and equipment rooms is used for domestic water and space heating. Several hundred thousand dollars of grants were received from Seattle City Light to apply toward the energy efficiency measures achieved during this project.
