In 2014, Washington State voters approved an initiative that required schools to limit the number of students per class. The Central Valley School District in Spokane, Washington was able to pass a bond in 2015 to meet the new state mandated class size reductions. The result was several new schools and remodels, including the expansion to the Sunrise Elementary School.
Coffman provided structural and electrical engineering and design services on approximately 74,000 sf of combined new and renovated space for a local elementary school. Construction costs were approximately $13 million and the new expansion includes additional classrooms in the north and south wings, along with a new wing of classrooms to the east. New construction consists of steel braced frames. Renovated one-story spaces included the mechanical room and kitchen, and the addition of a multipurpose room and art/community room.
