University of Hawaii Ho’ola Early Phase Clinical Research Center
Coffman provided civil, structural, mechanical, fire protection, electrical, and acoustical engineering services for the build-out of 7,857 sf of the existing University of Hawaii Cancer Center (UHCC) building to house the Ho’ola Early Phase Clinical Research Center (EPCRC) Phase 1.
The project encompasses existing shell space on the 1st floor and a portion of the 2nd floor. The 1st floor EPCRC will include consultation offices, exam rooms, restrooms, a clinical laboratory, a phlebotomy area, a waiting room, a clean room staff lounge, and circulation areas. The 2nd floor for the EPCRC will include a USP-797/800 research pharmacy, including an HD buffer room, a non-HD buffer room, an HD storage room, a non-HD storage room, a prep room, a clean room, a change room, a bio-hazard room, an anteroom, and a dirty room. A class II Type B2 biological safety cabinet (BSC) was to be provided in the HD buffer room and served by a two bag in bag out HEPA filter housing and a dedicated constant volume high plume exhaust fan. Both the hazardous exhaust system and pharmacy suite exhaust system will operate 24/7. Most of the mechanical equipment serving the areas were installed in the 5th floor mechanical penthouse, including dedicated outside air supply units (DOAS), pharmacy exhaust fans, and energy recovery ventilators. N+1 redundancy was provided for critical HVAC units. Coffman conducted an acoustical analysis of partitions to ensure speech privacy and assessed the mechanical design and equipment for background noise in sensitive spaces.
The facility encompasses a clinical blood lab, clinical trial infusion suites, a nursing station, and a research pharmacy, among other support areas. EPCRC also earned Silver LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council for meeting environmentally responsible standards that reflect a high commitment to energy and resource efficiency for new buildings.
