Building Information Modeling
One of the hottest topics in our industry is the use of a technology known as Building Information Modeling (BIM). This technology allows design teams to create virtual reality buildings, producing a model to relay information in three dimensions. This is a substantial shift from the traditional computer aided drafting method of drawing with vector file based lines that combine to represent objects.
It is anticipated that BIM can be utilized to bridge the information loss associated with handing a project from design team, to construction team and to building owner/operator, by allowing each group to add to and reference back to all information they acquire during their period of contribution to the BIM model.
BIM capabilities are being offered by several technology providers including Autodesk, Bentley Systems, Graphisoft and others. Coffman Engineers is currently working with the Revit software offered by Autodesk.
Coffman Engineers has been recognized as a leader in the consulting engineering industry when it comes to applying the concept of integrated building system design and 3D modeling. In the words of the architectural industry’s speaker at the January 2007 Northwest Construction Consumers Council (NWCCC) BIM Conference, “Coffman Engineers has stepped up” to the integrated engineering challenge. As a company, we're looking forward to expanding and building on our knowledge of BIM and helping to integrate these practices into various types of projects.
