Structural engineering services for new construction of three Type II buildings and other minor structures on a LAUSD elementary school campus. The campus contains one two-story classroom building on grade, one two-story classroom building over a subterranean garage and a single-story multipurpose structure. A large landmark entry canopy connects the two classroom structures with a two-story walkway. A large lunch shelter canopy and multi-purpose canopy provide weather protection to students. Total construction cost was $30M.
Early structural pre-design coordination with architect delivered project under budget, ahead of schedule, and increased seismic performance due to efficient structural system layout coordinated with school programming. An alternative foundation system was proposed to mitigate seismic liquefaction hazards thereby resulting in a $1M savings during construction. The structural system consists of steel framing with concrete filled metal decking, special concentric braced frames, reinforced concrete flat slab at ground level, isolated footings with grade beams.
