Coffman's corrosion and structural teams in Alaska were part of the quick-thinking response team that worked together with Alyeska Pipeline to create and execute a plan to bolster the Trans Alaska Pipeline System (TAPS) after the flooding of the Sagavanirktok River (Sag River) in Spring of 2015.

The team was awarded the 2016 Atigun Award for Teamwork from Alyeska Pipeline Service Company for their excellence in teamwork.

Due to unique river levels and record high temperatures, flooding downstream was a reality Alyeska Pipeline needed to plan for. The consultant team had little more than two weeks to plan, prepare, survey the route, and mobilize the right consultants and people. Without this immediate response, flooding would have endangered TAPS and the Dalton Highway which are critical lifelines for Alaska.

After the flooding, crews shifted from preventative efforts to recovery work. Coffman provided the initial response to evaluate and address the damage to the pipeline. The work included evaluating the pipeline condition, developing repair plans, completing pipeline inspections, evaluating pipe stresses over excavation areas, and completing pipeline coating and cathodic protection system repairs.  The effort to document and repair most of the damage to the right of way, pipeline, and cathodic protection systems took over 6 months, and Coffman is currently working on engineering for restoring depth of cover over one section of the pipeline this fall.

Team project managers said that due to great working relationships and communication, the large team of consultants and laborers were able to protect the pipeline, divert much of the floodwater, and complete repairs.

Congratulations to the Coffman employees who worked with Alyeska, Ahtna, Houston Contracting, Team Inspection, and Merrick Survey to complete this important project.
