Harborview Norm Maleng Building
Seattle, Washington
Award winning project – ASHRAE 2010 Technology Award
Coffman provided the mechanical engineering for this 280,000 sf inpatient expansion building. The project also included 30,000 sf of remodel and demolition of several existing seismically unsound buildings. New departments include intensive care, behavioral health, acute care, surgery, recovery, central supply, and various clinics. This project was originally slated for LEED® certification. However, the Owner ultimately decided to have available funds applied directly toward energy efficiency measures and increased maintenance efficiency. Several measures were applied to increase chilled water system efficiency and bring fan system efficiency up to a very impressive level. Fan systems were designed with N+1 redundancy, increasing reliability and simplifying maintenance. Heat recovered from computer and equipment rooms is used for domestic water and space heating. Several hundred thousand dollars of grants were received from Seattle City Light to apply toward the energy efficiency measures.
